Agreed, unfortunately.Part of it is that the European nations have, until fairly recently, been in a position to view racial "mixing" theoretically. Since the former colonial powers have let in far more of their former subjects, suddenly they have to deal with the reality, especially when the immigrants compete with the working class for resources. Part of it is that there is greater cultural homogeneity among europeans, and therefore it is more disruptive to have a massive influx of markedly different peoples. As James Baldwin noted long ago, in this country, blacks and whites are historically and culturally intertwined, and part of one another. By the way, I can hardly believe that the Germans cannot even debate the racial laws. It has long been a scandal that "blood" superceded "soil", but I would have thought that the rise of skinhead violence against Turks would have made it more permissible as a topic of discussion...
