[All those ISP's and web servers are not commercial?]

I, too, was surprised that he blows off Linux that much, because it's ISP penetration is quite impressive. Even if its not a market share equal, it's going to damp the profits to have a workable free system available. There may be some context missing, though, because I've seen quite different Linux quotes from Gates in the past.

He does have a point that there is some very necessary but not terribly fun to write software that will become a problem for Linux going forward. For example, most people don't realize how very hard it is to do a painless install/upgrade program for a broadly distributed system. Windows supports thousands of apps and drivers requiring a huge test matrix. IMO MSFT did an excellent job on the Windows98 installer.

As an anecdotal data point, a technically astute friend of mine who writes network drivers for a living installed Linux on his home machine a couple weeks ago. So far he is disappointed, saying it is a lot less polished than he expected, and that he didn't see it displacing Windows in significant volumes.
