For a case study of true elegance in shorting take a look at tom hua's posts during the day last week that itvu was shooting up from 40 to over 54; it would go from 40 to 43 to 46 to 49; the longs would taunt Hua, "shorting now tom"; and tom would respond with that wonderful grace and politeness: "Yes, I'm buying more; can't wait till it goes up". Talk about COOL. And then it hits 54, and boom, comes tumbling back down that day and the day after, until it hits a low of 38. Wow, that's style, class, balls, guts, instinct, cajones: whatever: it's what makes a great trader.
