Nonsense! I have learned a great deal on this thread about grammar, which is a fascinating subject to me. Nuances mean so much in communications among people, increasingly as we communicate online and don't have the tone of voice or body language to help clarify our meanings. I read professional publications--not to mention postings on SI--that mystify me because the writer does not grasp the role of grammar in clarification. Moreover, puzzling about the grammar of a construction can cause one to realize that the grammar is difficult because the thought itself is fuzzy and needs clarification.
