My take on the 3COM news. First of all, they don't have the talent and resources to make a serious run at FC/SAN. Second of all, someone at 3COM probably came up with a number on how much and how long it would take to put together a team to do R & D themselves and have competitive products out this year or next. Return on investment and the risk is just not worth it to them . They are in trouble with Wall street as is. Someone had to pull the plug before they have to sink $100 M into FC development. Sound sexy just doesn't cut it. This implies big players would probably buy the needed FC components to compensate what they don't have for SAN. Development cost IMO is way too costly in terms of time to delivery and real $$$ cost.
