Dear Dawg,
To add to TLC's response, chart analysis helps in finding good entry and exit points for stocks that you want to trade. John Murphy has a book out titled "Technical Analysis of the Futures Market" TA is much more important to futures trading and the same principals apply to stocks as well

To follow up on Mad2's sugesstion of John Murphy's Tech Anal Futures Markets recommendation...John has a newer book out aimed at beginners "The Visual Investor" It even comes with a trial version of a charting program.
