Hello!

There is much discussion within Novell about whether or not to give NDS for NT away for free or conitinue to charge a per seat fee as they do now.

IMHO, they should SEED the market with as many NDS for NT licenses as they possibly can. There will be a push for Active Directory (most of it coming from MSFT itself) which will cause some mindshare to slip from NDS to AD [whenever Windows 2000 does actually ship].

Honestly . . . whenever Active Directory ships, it will not have the same functionality as NDS does. Nor does it's MMC (management console) do anything near the FREE version of ZENworks that ships with NetWare 5.0. In fact, many people waiting for AD will be surprised at what they actually get.

The unfortunate thing will be that since many of these companies don't even know what they are missing (in NDS), they will cry that Active Directory is GREAT. Why? Because Active Directory is a very good upgrade from the current NT 4.0.

[This will be Novell's toughest challenge but I can see some sort of competition or evaluation by some 3rd parties which will set things straight]

Whenever these companies get around to testing NDS, they will see there's no comparison. Sort of like driving a Ferrari, once you do it, there's no sportscar that can impress you (I was thinking about using the analogy of dating a supermodel but....).
