Tom, I owned Explorers for 5 years and switched to Grand Cherokee last year. I recommend the Jeep. It rides like a car instead of a truck.
Get the V-8 if you want an edge. Snug fit on the baby's car seat too.

Check out the volvo wagon. It's lower to the ground and eaiser to load bikes and other gear on top (of course I'm short and biased).
I have friends with both the Explorer and Cherokee, except for the fuel economy both are good.
