Cheryl--What surprised me about that article I posted was that there was really no "new" info in it other than the implication that oil tankers other than Chevron's will be at anchor (oh crap.) What piqued by interest was the quote from the ESCWA advisor and the comment from the CERA analyst...Read those again...one more time now...got it yet?...Holding oil stocks?...Hmmm...I am. On another front, I have been trying to run down the origin of the "80% of basic chemicals used in pharmaceutical manufacturing in the U.S. come from abroad" quote that came out of the Bennett/Dodd sub-committeee. My research powers are vast but this little factoid has alluded me. I got so desperate I put out a call for help on csy2k. No one responded to the group. Only one private email that I might be looking in all the wrong places as this could have been researched for the use of the committee only and was not to be found in anything I had access to. Hard to believe. This should be easy enough to find. Though I did find a reference in Chemical Market Reporter to a recently organized CIA standing committee on chemical imports which is using 1996 as their baseline for their research...that backs up my findings that 1996 is the most recent year for reliable, comprehensive data. Perhaps this 80% figure is not widely circulated. Go figure. Should anyone come across this 80% factoid in the course of the web wanderings please post. I am being driven slowly mad...
