Costs of luxury outpace inflation by wide margin

Bloomberg News
March 28, 1999

NEW YORK - The price of a basket of luxury goods and services ranging from fur coats to Beluga caviar rose more than twice as fast as overall U.S. consumer prices last year, a private survey showed.

The Moet & Chandon Luxury Index, which tracks a dozen upscale goods and service, rose 3.9 percent last year, up half a point from 1997's 3.4 percent rate. Inflation as measured by the Labor Department's consumer price index rose 1.6 percent.

Round-trip plane tickets from New York to Paris on Air France's Concorde registered the largest increase in the luxury index. Well-heeled consumers last year shelled out 12.4 percent more for a seat on the supersonic jet, as the price jumped to $10,912 from $9,704.

Prices rose for seven of the luxury goods, such as Dom Perignon Champagne, and services - for example, a maid from New York's Maids Unlimited - the index tracks. Prices for four items were unchanged and one fell.
