03/29 02:23 China to crack down on illegal viagra sales

BEIJING, March 29 (Reuters) - China will crack down on illegal trade in
little blue pills sold as the impotence drug Viagra, state television said
on Monday.

China has not approved import or production of the drug, therefore all
Viagra sold in the country was fake, the television report said.

Viagra, the diamond-shaped pill manufactured by U.S. firm Pfizer Inc
<PFE.N>, has earned a reputation through local media as a miracle
cure.

"All Viagra sold in domestic markets must be sealed up and destroyed
under supervision," the television report quoted the State Bureau of
Pharmaceutical Supervision and Management as saying.

Pfizer's Beijing office said last week it would not be responsible for any
harm caused by pills sold as Viagra on the black market, according to
the Beijing Morning Post.

Nearly 600 Chinese men are taking Viagra in clinical trials as health
authorities evaluate the drug before approving imports. The
government has said it will announce a decision before the end of the
year.
