I should think you'd have to search the SSDI using the exact name that the, um, dead person used when he/she registered with SS. Like you, I always thought you had to use your "real" name, though frankly I don't remember what the procedure was when I registered.

Still, though, I'm in their files under my maiden name, I think. I never requested a change, at any rate. And I have no idea whether they figured that out on their own, or how to find out.

I did imagine, though, that you had to offer some sort of first name, but apparently not. "R Writer" didn't. Nor did a number of other Writers, and, I assume, an even greater number of other people...

I know for a fact that the name provided for my ssn by my mother is my middle name, not Thomas.
