Michael Ohlendorf, I agree with your observation 100%. I am a Canadian and know exactly the point you are making. I have seen how MSFT has been able to hurt companies in Canada as well. It has prevented Europeans and Asians from building a dominant software base. I think Americans politicians (including DOJ and states) are just too stupid to realize this. They think they are living in a bubble. They risk losing their power base to Europe or Asia---just look at electronics---would you buy an American made television? I would insist that my TV be made by a Japenese company and it does not really matter where it assembled. It could be assembled in Canada but must be made by a Japanese electronics company. That means the power would still be in Japan. Microsoft is able to do the same thing, have programmers working on projects worldwide but headquarters is still the USA. Once you lose your control, it will be hard to get it back.

If I was not a Microsoft investor, I would hope they break up the company in pieces so that it could not dominate the international market(including Canada)---it would definately open up the market for Canadian software developers.

I might have been another "ToySoldier" on this thread. I cannot see why a rational Canadian (unless he works for MSFT or owns shares) would want MSFT to win. I could understand why Americans would want MSFT to win.

Micheal, I guess you and I can provide a different perspective.
I just can't believe how naive American officials can be. There is no way a country in Europe or Canada would come down on its own intellectual power base.

Micheal, I think the states are just sending out their toughest proposals out so that they would appear to be giving up a ground in the negotiations. It is simply a bargaining tactic. Microsoft and the goverment are going settle, i feel, but not yet. It would probably happen after the rebuttal phase and just before a decision is rendered by Jackson. I feel that if Jackson rules against MSFT, he would be cautious about the remedies as he knows he could easily be overturned by appeals which is going to make him look bad
(and not to mention biased).

This is why Microsoft is not going to settle unless the states become reasonable. However, the states won't become reasonable until just before a verdict.

This means KO wll have to release its formula of Coke to the public, PFE will have to release its formula of sex medicine to its competitors so that it will go through a self destruction, it is really rediculous and only happen in the US. Intc will have to release its design to AMD , so that AMD can compete...etc. The next question is why IBM do not need to release its Lotus spreadsheet codes to the pulic, and how about other thousands of software developers? Do they all have to release their ource codes , or surrender them to the competitors? What about the intelectual property right ?
If US government can force one of its companies to release its source codes to the public, then why should the government forbid individual to copy the codes illegally ? Should Orcl release its source codes of data base to its thousands of small competitors so that they can compete ? It is just totally rediculous, and all in all the AGs just want money, and they will show their true color sooner than later.

At this moment, Microsoft should consider seriously to move its headquarter to overseas, maybe EU is a good place , which does not have these AG B**S**T which are bad for business.
