What's a bathyscaph?

You know that Piccard guy that just set the world record as first to circle the planet in a balloon? Well his grandfather developed a submersible called a bathyscaph that made it to the bottom of the Mariana Trench - the deepest point in all the oceans (I think they call it Challenger Deep now for some politically correct reason -g-). 35,800 feet deep. In 1960. Never been repeated, that we know of.

The grandfather was named Auguste Piccard. His brother, Jean, taught my Dad engineering in college. Hearing the stories inspired me to become a scuba diver, which I did at age 11. -g-
