Good advice. I back up essential files (documents, browser settings, e-mail files) on Zip disks.

It seems like every couple of years I need to start from scratch in a lot of senses. It's better to start with a fresh disk rather than a 'clone' of the old one with all the old junk lying around there... but this means setting up a lot of software with preferred settings all over again... I don't really know a good way to back up all that stuff, other than painstakingly going through everything I do with my computer and saving individual files.

Definitely 'cloning' a drive with bad sectors and a lot of convoluted junk (a lot of installing and uninstalling software) & old baggage seems like an unappetizing way to start fresh with a new hard drive.
