Did you see www10.nytimes.com Not only is it a nice takedown of our ecommerce pals (concluding that the only proven business model so far involves selling stock), but it partially answers your question about Dell's variable pricing: "For example, it is a common practice for Internet-only companies that sell computers and consumer electronics to have two price lists -- one for customers who shop through price-comparison services and another, significantly higher, set of prices for customers who arrive from other precincts on the World Wide Web."
