Rocky - RE: "Somewhat off-topic : AMD chips and ACID Being a Mac User, I am not that familiar with Intel and AMD Chip Compatibility issues. Are AMD K6-2 processors compatible with, and will they run the same apps that Intel PII processors will? I am thinking of buying a new low-priced PC (possibly an eMachines) that features an AMD chip. The App I am most concerned with running is a music/audio program called ACID. Does anyone know if the 300mHz AMD K6-2 chip run this App reliably? etower | 300k: $399 AMD K6-2 300MHz Thank you." Yes, the AMD K6-2 processor will run everything any Intel chip will run. If you have run the ACID program on an Intel-based PC, it will run on an AMD-based PC. Do you know if ACID requires more FPU calculations compared to integer ones? If so, an Intel chip will be faster. If not, the AMD chip will do just fine. Now, about the eMachine. I think you should be warned that you get what you pay for. If price is your only concern, then I guess it is good for you. I bet you have already checked out the system. e4me.com If you click on "Click Here To See Inside", you will only see 1 ISA slot, 1 PCI slot, and 1 shared PCI/ISA slot. The video card and sound card are integrated into the motherboard, but a modem isn't. That means one of the ISA slots will be taken up by that. You say you will be running a music/audio program, so I guess you will want to install a sound card of your own which will be better than the built-in one. That will eat up either a PCI or ISA slot. That leaves you with one free PCI slot for the life of the PC. (The USB port may help alleviate that problem.) Also, the computer only comes with 32MB of RAM. Since RAM is cheap, I suppose you could add in your own 32MB stick. The tech support is also on the small side. You get a 1 year warranty on parts and labor, but you only have 15 days of free tech support. To extend the tech support and parts replacement warranty, you pay an extra $59 (which is a good price). Again, if you are purchasing the PC based on price alone, it will do the job OK. If you want to get the best performance, you will have to spend at least $50 for an OK sound card, $40 for an extra 32MB stick of RAM, and $59 for the extra tech support. Hope this helped.
