You sure can declare it worthless -- I did on this year's return because it was effectively worthless at the end of 1998. You don't even need to bother with your broker, because that class of stock has been extinguished, i.e. the broker can no longer sell it. On your schedule D, just say when you bought it and, for date of sale, pick any date, say, in December, when you deemed the stock worthless and put $0 for the price at which you sold it.
