Heretic, Bad reservoir management causes what's called "coning"in a reservoir- where water which usually lies below the oil rises upward unevenly toward wellbores as the oil above it is extracted too quickly.

The water thus cones through the oil reservoir toward the wellbores of the overproducing oil wells and isolates pockets of reserves making them unproducible....

For each oil field there is a rate of production which will maximize the total reserves extracted - and also a rate of withdrawal which will maximize (hopefully!) your pw of the field.

Always a business decision on which approach to pick....
