The public voting, which ran from February 8 through March 25, attracted nearly 7,000 votes for the Streamers Awards nominees. Growth in Streaming Media
There are now more than 57 million registered unique users of
RealPlayer(R), the largest absolute growth of any consumer desktop application in 1998. Actual usage of RealPlayer has also grown dramatically, with Media Metrix reporting that the number of unduplicated home users in the US climbed by more than 300% to 15.5 million in December 1998, compared to 3.5 million consumers who used the RealPlayer in December 1997.

Just to clarify, Bong.

In MP3's standard implementation (including playback with Nullsoft's Winamp), a cable modem would have nothing to do with a file's sound quality. Its only role would be to speed up the file's download. The longer the file, the more attractive a broadband connection for this, or any other, download function. Typically, an MP3 file resides on the computer's hard disk in its entirety before it is played.

The exception to this approach is where MP3 files are streamed, as with Nullsoft's SHOUTcast "broadcasting" system. Even though streaming MP3 has limitations of scale (at least for the time being), employment of a broadband connection for MP3 streaming offers manifest sound quality benefits over dial-up Net access.
