Disney Is Combining Two Online Sites,
Including Subscription Service for Kids
By BRUCE ORWALL
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Walt Disney Co.'s Disney Online unit Monday will merge its Disney.com company Web site with its subscription-based online service for kids, which enjoyed a surprising growth spurt in the past six months, according to newly released figures.

Ken Goldstein, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Online, said the recent growth may be explained partly by the company's decision to move late last year away from distributing its software via compact disks. Instead, Disney made deals with computer makers such as Hewlett-Packard Co., Compaq Computer Corp. and Gateway Inc. to have the Blast software preinstalled on computers. The deals resulted in new subscribers during the holiday season.
