MPLS - Multi Protocol Label Switching is still an evolving standard which poses a problem for development of ASICs - Application Specific Integrated Circuits for next generation routers in the core. Pluris is working on a separate ASIC to perform quality of service functions, such as classifying incoming traffic and making sure it receives the proper priority. Even though the code is burned into the silicon, minor changes can be made to enable the chip to accomodate changes in an emerging standard like MPLS.
