Use the Globex futures as a sentiment indicator. What I usually do is check themin the morning and afternoon and at night to get a feel for where they are with respect to actual direction of the SPX. the numbers look big, but they move in fairly large indicators. Looking at them once doesn't do much, as one doesn't have a frame of reference. If you get in the habit of looking to see if they are in the negative by hundreds or only tens, vs positive by the same amounts, and then watch how the day opens you will get a better feel for it.

Someonethat ttrades index options could give a better technical view, but since I don't, that's how I use it. Generally a big red days I knkow to start looking for the rebound mid morning, and with large up numbers in thefutures, I look to get in early and bail at the mid morning leveling if i see no follow on accumulation.
