Lucent Technologies Wins $1 Billion Agreement For the Next Phase of AT&T's Wireless Network Buildout
PR Newswire - March 29, 1999 06:45

Lucent to Support AT&T's Evolution to a Third Generation TDMA Wireless Network

MURRAY HILL, N.J., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies today announced it has signed an agreement with AT&T to supply an expected $1 billion in equipment and services for the next phase of its DigitalPCS(SM) network buildout, and for ongoing business in existing wireless markets.

The four-year agreement includes the building of new wireless networks for some of AT&T's unbuilt 1900 MHz markets, enhancements to key existing 850 MHz markets, and for ongoing business.

With Lucent's digital wireless technology, AT&T will be able to support more customers on its existing wireless network. In addition, Lucent is helping AT&T evolve its network with next-generation technology that will offer consumers reliable new services such as wireless Internet access whether on AT&T's DigitialPCS TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) network or while traveling internationally.

"We selected Lucent because of its aggressive and complete commitment to EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) technology," said Dan Hesse, president and CEO, AT&T Wireless Services, in a reference to the enhanced wireless transmission systems that will be common to TDMA and GSM networks.

"With Lucent as one of our strategic vendors we will maintain our market leadership in our deployment of wireless voice and data services. Through our collaboration in the buildout of our U.S. markets, we are also laying the groundwork for building a third generation wireless network that satisfies the criteria for IMT-2000, the International Telecommunication Union's standard for third generation wireless networks."

TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) is a global digital wireless standard that serves nearly 14 million mobile customers. AT&T's TDMA wireless network will incorporate high-speed data systems similar to those planned by carriers whose networks are based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) standard. Recently, Lucent announced a comprehensive wireless platform that will enable TDMA wireless network operators to offer third generation wireless services such as seamless global roaming and converged voice, video and data applications.

"Lucent and AT&T have a common vision for how we can evolve TDMA to take advantage of the new features offered by third generation wireless technology. This new technology will enable AT&T to offer its customers enhanced high-speed data services and international roaming," said Jim Brewington, group president, Wireless Networks, Lucent Technologies. "Our Bell Labs scientists and developers are working with AT&T to develop next-generation base stations that support Internet protocols."

The digital wireless equipment to be installed in AT&T's new markets includes Lucent's Autoplex(R) Series II base stations and Mobile Switching Centers with the 5ESS(R) Switch, one of the world's most reliable and widely deployed switching systems.

Lucent Technologies is now the leading supplier of TDMA equipment in the North American 1900 MHz market, based on the total population served. Lucent's TDMA base stations, equipped with spectrum efficiency features developed by Bell Labs, will allow AT&T to more than double the capacity it can support in the same spectrum.

AT&T Wireless Services, Inc. is a major wireless carrier in the United States providing a broad range of wireless voice and data services to more than 9.7 million customers. AT&T Wireless Services, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of AT&T Corp. (NYSE: T), the world's leader in telecommunications services and technology. More information is available at att.com.
