Federal Sources Studies Project 34% Growth for Sales of Electronic Government Goods and Services to Federal Government From 1999 to 2003 and a 26% Rise in High Speed Internet

April 1, 1999

MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Federal Sources, Inc. (FSI), a PRIMEDIA company, projects the federal market for electronic government (EG) will rise to $9.2 billion during the period 1999 to 2003, a compound annual rate increase of 34 percent. FSI also forecasts a 26 percent rise in the government's investment in high speed networking and a $5.6 billion market during the same period.

The details are contained in two recently completed FSI studies. The first is titled Electronic Government and the second Advanced Internet Products and Services for the Federal Government.

The EG assessment is a 100-page report which includes 40 figures and tables in detailing the wide range of EG activities at the federal level. Among items covered are electronic data interchange, card-based technologies, electronic procurement, the Internet, electronic benefits transfer and government web-site activity. The study also describes the activities of leading agencies in the EG realm, future EG spending and how EG is provided to private citizens.

"By and large, federal agencies have done a great job in implementing the culture of the National Performance Review," said Maryann Hirsch, FSI's Senior Vice President for Consulting. "But it's going to get much bigger as those agencies implement the core technologies of EG in the next few years. We believe the market for EG-related activities in the federal government will expand at a compound rate of 34 percent."

FSI CEO Thomas L. Hewitt added: "EG has evolved from the latest technology buzzword to an essential element of each federal agency's mission. With more than 80 million adult Internet users in the U.S., the ability of citizens to reach the federal government electronically is on the rise. FSI, the leading provider of Internet-based business-to-business market intelligence for the public sector information technology industry, estimates the federal market for EG will be $2 billion by the year 2003."

In the 160-page Internet study, FSI shows how the federal government will increase its investment in high-speed networking 3.8 times in the next five years. Illustrating how the government will exploit the next growth phase of the Internet through the Next Generation Internet and several other initiatives, FSI estimates the five-year growth at a compound annual rate of 26 percent.

"This is an emerging market that more telecommunications companies should be watching," Hewitt declared.
