> I just sent a message to Bill Gates ...<

I don't think he gives a s---. But this event coming on the heels of the anti-trust case can help in finally bringing these guys back down to earth. In their crazed dash for money and world domination they have foisted horrible software on us, unacceptable maintenance and upgrade costs.

And now this bloated edifice is under attack by viruses (I can hardly resist evolutionary metaphors). The timing and context is serendipitous. MS has done nothing to immunize DOS, NT, Windows, etc., and now it is precisely these MS products that are suffering. It is conceivable that MS only virus are being developed that will intrude via ActiveX, Excell, Word and other products, perhaps to the point that it will become a corporate risk to use MS.

It shows once again that MS has not grasped what the Internet is about (except as something to exploit), i.e., its not a Personal Computer anymore. And yet, it is the Internet that will find a solution to this virus (thereby helping MS directly).

I can only hope that stuff like this will wake them up to become responsible corporate citizens, fix their software and stop trying to eliminate everyone else.

Thure

I don't understand why you guys are all over Microsoft because of the Melissa virus. It's not as if they wrote it.

Microsoft software is targeted because it's so widely used. Jeez, it's the malicious jerks who write/distribute viruses that should be blamed. Just because those guys used Microsoft software as a tool...it's not Microsoft's fault that their technologies are used improperly. I suppose if someone uses a Sun Solaris workstation to to hack the pentagon, you'd advocate suing Sun? Or if a person murders another, the gun/bullet makers get sued? Puleez.

PS. Interestingly....I tried to send a fake/joke Melissa email to some friends, but my mail server wouldn't let it leave my outbox so long as the subject line read: "Important Message From Sal." But then when I spelled it as "Importent Message From Sal," it zipped on through.

PPS. If you think that a stupid virus is going to cause a big drop in MSFT stock, well...it's a good thing you're only doing the shorting with play money :)
