Company Press Release

EMC Safeguards Telecom Provider
Against Data Center Outages

Provides Near-Instantaneous Recovery of
Mission-Critical Data Across Remote Data Centers

HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 29, 1999-- EMC Corporation, the world's
leading provider of enterprise storage systems, software and services, announced today that CTC
Communications Corp., a rapidly growing provider of integrated voice and data communications
solutions to corporate customers, has selected EMC Enterprise Storage to help in its quest for
100% business uptime through continuous availability of mission-critical information.

CTC, based in Waltham, Mass., has installed EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems at a
primary data center and a disaster recovery center located 100 miles apart. Using EMC Symmetrix
Remote Data Facility (SRDF) business continuity software, the Symmetrix systems will automatically
mirror data across the two sites, providing CTC with near-instantaneous resumption of business if a
major outage occurs at one of its data centers.

Mike Donnellan, CTC's Vice President, Operations, stated, ''Network uptime and service reliability
are not obscure requirements; they are mission critical for CTC and our customers. EMC exceeded
our expectations in designing and developing an integrated, multivendor solution to a complex and
demanding set of performance standards. Through EMC Enterprise Storage systems and software,
CTC and our customers will be shielded from outage events and be ensured that all of the
information supporting our network is fully redundant and continuously available.''

''EMC's ability to provide superior information availability gives us additional opportunities to grow
our business. In addition, it protects us and our customers from revenue loss and competitive threats
due to potential data center failure,'' said Donnellan.

''Additionally, a tremendous amount of data flows through our information system network on a
daily basis and it all needs to be stored and managed,'' added Donnellan. ''EMC simplifies and
reduces the cost of storage administration by providing us a common way to manage all of our
information. We have significantly reduced training expenses because the EMC expertise is
interchangeable across so many applications and systems. Because all of our data is consolidated
onto EMC Enterprise Storage, it's easier to re-adjust our storage allocations to keep up with rapid
changes and growth.''

CTC's entire business -- including its provisioning, customer care, billing, and network operations
applications running on Sun servers -- are supported by EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage
systems. To further protect its data, CTC has selected EMC EDM Symmetrix Path for high-speed
back up of its Oracle and Informix databases and EMC TimeFinder software for online back ups of
its production systems. CTC also uses EMC Symmetrix Manager software to provide simplified
storage management and EMC PowerPath software for automatic load balancing and fail-over
across Symmetrix systems and servers.

''Telecommunications is more sensitive to the importance of continuous information availability than
any other industry,'' explained Bob Dutkowsky, EMC's Executive Vice President of Markets and
Channels. ''EMC takes the telecommunications industry's commitment to quality of service one step
further by enabling CTC and other successful companies to achieve EMC's vision of a Universal
Data Tone -- where information is as accessible as electricity or a dial tone. These companies are
significantly advancing their competitive advantage through the use of EMC Enterprise Storage to
create exceptionally reliable, flexible, and cost-efficient access to their mission-critical information
resources.''

CTC is a rapidly growing provider of integrated communications solutions to business customers in
the Northeast U.S. It provides an extensive array of voice and data services including local, long
distance, enhanced telephone services, frame relay, Internet access and T1 and ISDN services. The
company markets its services through its 175 member direct sales force in 25 branch offices located
throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New
York.

EMC Corporation, a Fortune 500 company based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, is the world's
technology and market leader in the rapidly growing market for intelligent enterprise storage systems,
software and services. The company's products store, retrieve, manage, protect and share
information from all major computing environments, including UNIX, Windows NT and mainframe
platforms. The company has offices worldwide, trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the
symbol EMC, and is a component of the S&P 500 Index. For further information about EMC and
