hdl, a couple of questions:

1. Can a company continue to exist if it's not making any money on the products it sells?

2. Do you believe that consumers are "quality oriented?"

3. Do you think that large companies are going to purchase equipment with the impression that not only are they of a lower quality, but technical support systems have not really been established.

4. Do you think that component makers are going to draw a line in the sand when it comes to reducing THEIR margins?

5. Did you know that Dell has a low percentage of the consumer market?

6. Why hasn't the Air Force, Ford Motor Company and many other large corps bought their computers from e-machines? Could it be that they don't trust the infrastructure?

7. Did you know that I would buy a new Volkswagen instead of a Hyundia, because they are simply higher quality products that are less likely to require service.

Merrill Lynch just came out and said that IBM pc division was profitable in 2H98. They believe that IBM is looking at an estimated loss of under $300 million this year for that division. Of course, given IBM's expense allocation process, it's hard to know if that is really as much of a loss as it appears.

Interestingly, IBM now receives 1/2 of its profit from software and services unrelated to hardware. 1998 Software and Services combined contributed 65% of the company's pretax income.

hdl...expensive pc dying...ibm

ibm has tanked it's pc market, trying to compete with low priced clones....are you for real....

how large is your dell short loss...good god, concentrate on that instead of coming up with inane thoughts of the yellow peril sweeping into the usa and taking over the usa pc market...dell is not going to drop enough to get the stains out of your shorts...wash them now...before they become more soiled...
