Internets surge amid overall market strength

NEW YORK, March 29 (Reuters) - Leading Internet shares surged in early trade Monday,
boosted by an overall strong market and upbeat sentiment about the high-flying sector.

''The group seems to be on fire again. With the recent past in this group that's not a surprise,''
said Peter Coolidge, senior equity trader at Brean Murray & Co.

The American Stock Exchange's 50-share Internet index (^IIX - news) was up 9.34 percent
as U.S. exchanges posted gains in a broad-based rally.

The Dow industrials (^DJI - news) were up 133 points to 9955 and the Nasdaq composite
index (^IXIC - news) strengthened 47 to 2466.

Among active issues, Amazon.com Inc.(Nasdaq:AMZN - news) rose 10-7/16 to 149-1/2 151 after the Internet retailer said it
would launch a Web auction service.

Online auction company eBay Inc. (Nasdaq:EBAY - news) slumped with the news. The shares were off 6-3/8 to 148-1/8.

iVillage Inc. (Nasdaq:IVIL - news) rose 12-1/8 to 91, helped by positive comments from analyst David Alger in this week's edition
of Barron's. The women's Web site has rocketed from 24 since its initial public offering March 19.

Alger also had upbeat views on Amazon.com, Internet service company At Home Corp. (Nasdaq:ATHM - news) and online
video company Broadcast.com Inc. (Nasdaq:BCST - news).

At Home rose 9 to 159-7/8 and Broadcast.com was up 3-3/8 to 113-7/8.

Traders said the sector was still being helped by NationsBanc Montgomery Securities analyst Alan Braverman's start of coverage
of nine Internet companies last week. He rated the firms as buys.

Kenneth Ducey, director of trading at BT Brokerage, said the Internet stocks' quick start Monday was boosted by traders wanting
to lock in quick intraday profits.

''The first stocks traders take is the Internets, since that is where you get the most play,'' he said.
