Strangely, I have looked in to this. It is difficult to get good security-level data going very far back, but I was able to cadge together some. While owning the biggest would have served you very well for the last few years, this has not been an inviolable rule. From '87 to '94, for example, buying only the largest stocks was about equal to buying the rest of the market -- precisely what you'd expect over the long term. It is recent periods that are strange -- unless you believe that a company's market capitalization is necessarily a predictor of the magnitude of its future appreciation. -mb
