It it was a large cash dividend, I don't think it would really help the company in the long run...

Microsoft has 5 billion shares of stock outstanding. If three companies each paid $5 billion dollars for licensing rights - we'll get a whopping $3 per share windfall. IMHO, this doesn't seem like a good deal for shareholders.
