Not really. Guys like rudedog are much more adept at dissecting
the potential ramifications. A lot of folks have already done
so on this thread.

Suffice to say, much the talk is based on rumor anyway.

Some things are clear however. Dell's business model is
about to push IBM out of the box business altogether (imagine
that). IBM has a great profit structure in it's component
business yet it must give some of those profits back just
to put those devices in a box. Silly isn't it?

I think it's a no-brainer that IBM will be slowly exiting the
mid-range box business and encouraging their customers to
buy boxes from OEM's who use IBM's components (e.g. Dell).
Looks like fairly large incremental volume and corporate
customer gains in the near future.

The current un-rumored affiliation gives Dell unprecedented
opportunity to move higher into the enterprise area... but
that's already been discussed extensively here.

Partnering yes. Mergers or Acquisitions no. Good for Dell yes.
Good for IBM yes. Good for Compaq no.
