Melissa is a pretty clever virus(atleast in the way it enters your system).
cbs.marketwatch.com

cnn.com

A LOT of people would be vulnerable to it(or its variants).

Also, it has a TIMEBOMB built into it(apparently based onnowtime with a Simpsons quote) but this (or a variant) could seriously cause misery to a LOT of people at a future date match. Also, one cannot really dismiss viruses as something that happens to "stupid people". The virus checkers are as good as the next virus that succeeds in infecting your computer.
