<<As far as I know, you don't need any special graphics cards to use any of the DFP monitors in use today.>>

You would not be able to connect a DFP to your computer without a special graphic card. And most of them are actually bundle with :

The ATI XPERT LCD is bundled with display panels from seven monitor
manufacturers and computer OEMs. Products include the Gateway
(FPD1500), Princeton (DPP500), MiTAC (12PS, 15PX), Mag Innovision
(LT530), TECO (TL 520), Acer (F50P) and ViewSonic (VPD 150). ViewSonic is currently the top flat panel brand in terms of U.S. shipments.

Sun -
The "new" DFP's are not back-compat with SVGA (an analog link with RGB, Vsync, etc). TDFX has chosen the middle standard, a wise marketing move although limited to 1280x1024 resolution. The only other standard is the 36 pin (looks like SCSI-3) 48-bit digital interface found on the SGI 1600SW (known as OpenLDI) that runs at 1600x1024, designmax 2048x1600 (for the new IBM screen). No DA in this picture unless I/m confused !
