[The Office 2000 shipment is great news.]

This makes Maffei's pre-announcement pushing the coupon revenue into future quarters less ambiguous by eliminating serious delays in Office 2000 as a motivation. It's possible it was a tax move and nothing more, but it could be he was trying to smooth out an up-spike that would be a tough comparison next year. The latter would bode well for this quarters earnings.

It's my personal belief that the 24 straight years of increasing earnings is important to Gates. I bet he'd love to say "I ran MSFT for 30 years and never had a down year". He'd get a chapter in every MBA textbook for the next hundred years should he accomplish that. Up-spikes are a threat to such a goal.
