Calls for testing of genetically-engineered products
Australian Broadcasting Corp
Monday 29 March, 1999 (7:27am AEDT)

There are concerns consumers will lose confidence in the safety
of their food unless genetically-engineered products are tested
before being released onto the market.

The Consumer Food Network fears the nation's health ministers
will approve more than 500 foods containing untested genetically-
engineered ingredients.

Under an agreement reached last year, companies have until May
13 to have their products tested or see them taken off the shelves.

Network coordinator, Dr Dick Copeman, says only two
companies have had a total of seven products approved.

Dr Copeman says companies are snubbing the requests of
consumers who want no more genetically-engineered foods
released until the regulations on labelling have been tightened.

"It seems now that there's a whole lot of foods already out there
unlabelled and they're all going to be given this de facto
legalisation."
