Re: Garbage

Last Sunday on Sixty Minutes Christiane Amanpour (forgive me if my spelling is incorrect (as I'm sure it is), I'm too lazy to check), did a story on the untouchables in India. The most interesting part (to me, who's lived in India) showed an untouchable woman who is destined because of her birth to clean out latrines. And the latrines were a series of holes, kind of built up holes, but dozens of holes, one next to the other, no walls inbetween. And she has to clean the toilets with her bare hands because that's what her father did and her grandfather and every ancestor did--brushes or special tools are too expensive. She bemoans her fate, and wished her children didn't have to continue the cycle.

But, I agree, around where I live, the garbage collectors have a pretty good job. They get up early, work like hell, and then go home when they're done. Earn alot plus overtime.
