IBM didn't punk out and fought the good fight for a decade, and the feds didn't achieve their ends.

And they virtually destroyed their company in the process. Consider this: the market cap of IBM today is a bit less than $160 billion. The market cap of the former Bell System companies (the folks who "punked out" as you say) is a bit less than $500 billion. IBM's most recent dividend was 88 cents. The combined dividend of the Bell System companies was $6.80. Now, once again... Who took the wiser strategy?
