Hard for stock performance to continue-Gramlich

WASHINGTON, March 31 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Governor Edward Gramlich said on Wednesday it would be hard for stock prices to continue their strong performance and they may not continue to outperform bonds.

''We've had a long period of appreciation in stock values. It is not so obvious that the historical relationship between the rate of returns on stocks and bonds will persist,'' Gramlich said.

Gramlich, who was taking part in a round table discussion on Social Security, noted that earnings to price ratios on stocks have dropped close to the level of interest rates on bonds as stock prices have increased.

''It's not so obvious that over a long period of time, stocks will be a better investment than bonds,'' he said.
