Mention of OSI in Smart Money story on top mid-cap managers

Catch Them If You Can
By Leslie Haggin

MANY BIG-CAP mutual fund managers are finally giving in to the high valuations of Internet stocks and adding America Online (AOL) and Amazon.com (AMZN) to their portfolios. But aggressive mid-cap fund managers aren't having the same crisis. The best of them picked up these stocks long ago, when their market caps were a fraction of what they are today.

Take Douglas Foreman, manager of TCW/DW Mid-Cap Equity (TMDBX). Amazon first appeared in his fund's May 1998 semiannual report. At the time it was trading at a split-adjusted 14 11/16. Today, it's at 149 5/8, and the stock is the fund's largest portfolio holding.

... To be included in Foreman's 50-stock portfolio a stock must have high earnings growth and a market cap between $300 million and $5 billion. The average market cap of the fund's holdings is $4.4 billion. While technology is one of Foreman's favorite sectors at 39.3% of assets, he holds a few old-fashioned stocks as well. Outdoor Systems, Inc. (OSI), a billboard operator that was the subject of a recent SmartMoney.com story, is the fund's No. 9 holding.
