There has been a lot of discussion in the QCOM thread about this. QCOM has hundreds of patents. As important are the many licensing agreements, which, unlike the patents, are not limited by the calendar.

The bottom line is that anyone who wants to sell CDMA products will need to pay QCOM for the privilege for a very long time.
