NTAP filers can have several ATM, FO, and E-net controllers on board. So the network bandwidth to the filer can be very wide. Filers are also very efficient in handling network traffic. Remember, filers have a special OS written by NTAP that is optimized to do only the things that a filer needs to do--disk I/O, network I/O.

In the early years, NTAP used to say that the first thing they would do for a customer is to move the bottleneck from disk i/o and server capacity to the network "where it belongs". That was in the days when 10base-t was about the best you could do. Things have changed alot since then.
