Perhaps so. As my seniors here have apprised me - I grew up at one full remove. By preprogrammed failure I cannot mean the broad movement - it did not fail in its own way, it made a deep mark on society, thus failure could not be ... you get it. I was thinking about the radical subgroup, the ones who took their counterculture to its logical end and disengaged into antitechnological retreats. Their disengagement meant that they limited their effect on society to example, and the press wasn't listening. It was kept busy by the other social forces, the ones doing all the splintering.

In summary - I never meant to disagree with your basic premise. I got sidetracked onto a narrow portion of the larger discussion.
