I was thinking about the radical subgroup, the ones who took their counterculture to its logical end and disengaged into antitechnological retreats. Their disengagement meant that they limited their effect on society to example, and the press wasn't listening. It was kept busy by the other social forces, the ones doing all the splintering. In summary - I never meant to disagree with your basic premise. I got sidetracked onto a narrow portion of the larger discussion.
