Allied Force commandos enter Kosovo

PARIS, March 30 (Reuters) - NATO special forces
commandos are infiltrating Kosovo daily on clandestine
missions to gather intelligence on Serb forces, a French
newspaper said on Tuesday.

The Catholic daily La Croix said separate American, British
and French teams of four or five men each were entering the Serbian province
with sophisticated communications equipment.

Their main mission was to ascertain if Serb forces were bringing heavy
weapons towards the Macedonian border which could threaten NATO troops
based there, the daily said.

An armed forces spokesman told Reuters there would be no official comment
on the matter.

The newspaper said the commandos were carrying out daily missions, mostly
from eastern Macedonia.

La Croix, which gave no source for its report, said allied commanders had
decided the special forces would carry out ``punctual'' attacks against Serb
police or militiamen if they carried out atrocities against civilians.

An order for such attacks seemed imminent on Monday, the newspaper said.

La Croix said the units involved were drawn from the British Special Air
Service (SAS), the U.S. Navy's SEAL commandos and the French army's
Special Operations Command (COS).

JBL--- I think we can achieve some kind of settlement without invasion, although we never should have declared that we had ruled out ground troops. What we cannot do is secure a settlement without a massive presence in Kosovo, presumably in league with the Russians, and perhaps Bdlarus and Ukraine. I doubt that we can avoid participation, since our military is so much better trained and equipped. As I have said before, my gut says "think Northern Ireland, not Vietnam"...
