<Embedded chips/systems:A List of What Can Go Wrong>

GENERAL MOTORS Year 2000 test team has developed this base document from several sources and pilot experiences. The test cases included are based on industry wide information and actual Year 2000 problems encountered during the pilot process. These test procedures can be used to test commercial off the shelf components and systems assembled from those components.

Amazes me (after viewing GM's testing procedures), that those who plan to "fix on failure" ... can actually believe they're gonna be able to fix integrated embedded systems within 3-7 days ... if/when a "failure" occurs. This is a real simple process, huh?

RE: embedded chips/systems: water and heavy transport.
I received this note from someone who works for one of the major Y2K experts:
"Thanks for the "Fatal Five" update [my post here #4844]-I get the distinct impression that
the other Y2K'ers are overlooking water and heavy transport.... but Alan
Simpson (CSPAN broadcast, 6/2/98) was talking starvation/famine in Urban
centers back in June 1998 beause of the railroads/trucking industry/fuel
distribution non-compliance...."

I have not seen any reports since Simpson's to indicate any significant hope for end-end compliance in these sectors, to date.....
To the contrary....particularly with respect to refineries and port facilities and maritime shipping, and oil producers' status....
