They have, or claim to have, technology which is both difficult and patent-protected. Inktomi's claim lies primarily in the ability of its search and cache engine and coming ecommerce engine to scale effectively. (Scale means the technology will continue to operate as more and more simultaneous users access it.) As the internet grows, only Inktomi's technology will be robust enough to scale with it, Inktomi claims.'
