Tellabs to Provide Managed Network Solution to Expand and Enhance Cyprus Telecommunications Authority's High-Speed Leased-Line Network

PR Newswire - March 30, 1999 09:42

LISLE, Ill., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB) has announced that Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) will deliver high-speed digital leased-line services throughout Cyprus using Tellabs' MartisDXX(TM) managed transport and access network solution.

Tellabs' solution will enable CYTA to provide national and international leased-line services at speeds up to 2 Mbps for data and voice communications, Internet access, LAN interconnection, PBX interconnection and connecting base stations in CYTA's mobile networks. It also will provide grooming and consolidation of national and international data traffic.

"Using Tellabs' MartisDXX equipment and network management system, CYTA aims to expand its leased-line network and enhance the quality of its services," said Stelios Joakim, CYTA's manager of telecommunications infrastructure.

The CYTA MartisDXX network will be deployed in phases and eventually will have island-wide coverage. The first phase of the network is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 1999.

"The MartisDXX solution will help CYTA to meet demands for high-quality services by providing managed access and transport facilities cost-effectively," said Chris Royden, vice president and general manager for Tellabs' European, Middle Eastern and African sales region. "CYTA's choice of the Tellabs MartisDXX managed network solution underlines the system's excellent fit for digital leased-line service environments."

The Tellabs MartisDXX system offers a single platform for delivery of a wide range of fixed and mobile services, from narrowband to broadband. It combines intelligent hardware with centralized management to enable the rapid deployment and reconfiguration of telecommunications transport and access networks containing thousands of elements. The MartisDXX network management system (NMS) allows end-to-end management for centralized or distributed control of all network elements, providing a complete network overview, and remote performance monitoring, fault diagnosis, configuration and service activation.

The Tellabs MartisDXX system is currently in operation in more than 150 networks in 60 countries worldwide, providing intelligent transport for mobile services and multi-service platforms for a broad range of business services, including LAN interconnect, digital leased line, frame relay and PBX interconnection.

CYTA is a corporate body established by law and is responsible for the provision, maintenance and development of telecommunications services, both local and overseas.

Taking advantage of the island's geographical position, CYTA has developed an extensive submarine fiber optic cable network, which connects Cyprus with neighboring countries and the rest of the world, and an extensive satellite network. These capabilities make Cyprus a telecommunications hub in the area.

CYTA provides a variety of advanced telecommunication services covering the whole spectrum of customer needs for both voice and data communications, fixed and mobile. Special emphasis is also placed on the provision of value-added services such as various Internet and multimedia services.
