I would be reluctant to hold "through" earnings

Couldn't agree with you more. Holding through earnings is, in general, a really stupid thing to do for a trader, unless you're incredibly confident about the stock.

Even if the earnings figures are above or below estimates, all it takes are a few analysts to put their own spin on the information, and *voila* you're screwed at the open.

The safer thing to do is to play the run-up and sell a day or so before earnings. Several stock picking services, like Jenna's, seem almost completely devoted to IDing those plays.
