TEGIC COMMUNICATIONS FILES COUNTERCLAIMS
AGAINST ZI CORPORATION

Tegic's Technology does not Infringe the O'Dell Patent

SEATTLE — March 30, 1999 —Tegic Communications, Inc. today announced it has filed certain counterclaims against Zi Corporation.
Earlier this month, Zi Corporation filed a suit against Tegic Communications for patent infringement. The suit was filed in the United States District Court in Seattle, Wash. Zi Corp. claims that Tegic's cellular phone technology, which will be introduced into China later this year violates Zi's ‘O'Dell' United States patent.
According to Bob Hart, president and CEO of Tegic Communications, Zi's claims have obvious jurisdictional issues associated with the extra-territorial enforcement of a U.S. patent against non-U.S. products to be sold in China. However, on a more fundamental level, the O'Dell patent is not infringed. Even to the untutored observer, Tegic's superior, patented technology is markedly different from the cumbersome implementation of Chinese text input that is contemplated by the O'Dell patent. As a result, Tegic has asked the Court to rule that Tegic is not infringing on the O'Dell patent.
"It is telling that Zi Corp appears not to utilize the O'Dell patent in its own products," Bob Hart explained. "Tegic has been extraordinarily successful in competing in the marketplace and this lawsuit appears to be a desperate measure. While it is unfortunate that Zi Corp. has filed its meritless claims, Tegic is confident that its technologies do not infringe the O'Dell patent and that the Court will agree."
