"Over the last 5 years I have had probably three VCRs go bad on me."

I have had a similar experience. All were different brands. However, I also have one older VCR that cost way more but is still operating like new. I credit the failures on cheap components to give me cheap competitive prices. Given the VHS format, manufacturers can not add technology so they compete on price.

I will not buy a hard drive recorder because of dependability. I don't know how dependable they will turn out to be (I have also had 2 hard drive failures). I will buy a hard drive recorder because it will give me sharper digital surround sound and a sharper picture. This will only happen if I record off CD's or broadcasts when broadcasters start implementing their new standards.

If the general public bought like I do, the disk drive stocks would be booming.

Robert,

<<Will anyone else be queuing up to get one?>>

Yes, but my suite will still include a VHS. Then I will have disk for random access and tape for transportability until such time as a removable cartridge disk drive is available that offers 4 G Bytes at a competitive price (under $25 bucks) and has a clear form factor leadership. To me that is the battle to watch but it is going to take a while.

Best,
Stitch
